I caught up online with Adam last week and asked him to share his views on the future of business post Covid-19. This is what he had to say.

Angela Mellak sit down with Adam Schwab

Future of business post Covid-19

Like most entrepreneurs, I’m a paranoid optimist, so I like to think things will get back ‘normal’, albeit normal is likely to be a different to what we’re used to.

Working from Home

The notion of working from home becoming standard for everyone doesn’t make a huge amount of sense. For some people, working from home is ideal – if you’ve got a role which doesn’t need significant collaboration and you’ve got a very significant travel time, the ability to work from home for 2-3 days a week is a massive benefit to efficiency (and general happiness levels).

My personal view is no one should from home all the time. Spending a couple of days a week with colleagues in the office (if possible) is a great middle ground, even for people with jobs that don’t require lots of close contact. The exception to that is parents with small kids, in that case, the efficiency gained can be outweighed by the time needed to care and educate the children.

How do you run your business?

Every business is different but the most critical aspect to dealing with COVID19 is cashflow and making sure you have enough runway. Even the biggest businesses need to be preparing for the worst (but hoping for the best).

Several start-ups I work with have raised capital at much lower valuations than they would have done a few months ago, but ultimately, survival is far more important than hyper growth at the moment.

That said, it’s also important not to spend every waking hour worrying about survival – build your runway and then start focusing on accelerating out of the turn. Now is the perfect time to be building great products and getting your customer focus laser sharp for when demand eventually returns.

Background of Adam Schwab

Adam Schwab is an award-winning entrepreneur, he is Co-founder of LuxuryEscapes.com – is one of the world’s fastest growing travel websites, with more than two million members accessing our limited-time offers at ‘insider’ prices. Luxury Escapes into one of Australia’s most profitable e-commerce companies in with operations in four continents and more than 200 team members, Luxury Escapes turns over more than $550 million annually. Lux Group was #1in the 2013 BRW Fast 100 list (and on the Fast 100 Lists in 2014 and 2015), and most recently Luxury Escapes were voted one of Australia’s coolest places to work.

“We’re proud to be on the world’s favourite retailers with one of the highest customer satisfaction scores of any business, anywhere on earth.”

Since 2004, Adam has been a financial journalist and business commentator specialising in corporate governance, economics and legal affairs for Crikey and BRW. Adam is a regular commentator on Business View and the Perrett Report on Sky Business and has appeared on Today Tonight and Channel Seven News nationally. Adam was named Young Executive of the Year in the CEO Magazine Executive awards 2015 and was nominated for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year in 2014.

Author: In 2010, Adam released the Amazon bestseller, Pigs at the Trough: Lessons from Australia’s Decade of Corporate Greed, published by John Wiley & Sons.

Current roles:

Director: Adam has been a director of the Myeloma Foundation of Australia since 2010, and has run two Melbourne Marathons completely barefoot to raise funds for the foundation. Adam is a Mentor at Startmate, Chapter Membership officer at Young Presidents Organisation, Non executive director at Private media, Non executive director at Lux Everyday, Non executive director at bluthum and Executive chairman of book well.

We live in a world where it is easier than ever to achieve extraordinary productivity. Why is it then that we all feel so overwhelmed?

Kory Kogan, the Global Practice Leader for Organizational Development at
FranklinCovey, combined her “School of Hard Knocks” education growing up in New York City with more than 25 years of experience in business to help understand productivity and navigate an increasingly complex world.

This begins with developing organizational processes that create a culture of productivity by separating what is important versus what is unimportant. On average, employees state they are paying attention to important things 60 percent of the time. This means they feel like they are wasting almost half of their time.

To optimize this, organizations and individuals need to first understand the three biggest problems taxing the portion of the brain responsible for planning, attention, self-control and follow-through:

• There are more decisions now than before. We are trying to manage
linearly and letting high value/important decisions fall through the cracks.
• Our attention is under attack from, you guessed it, our phones.
We have an energy crisis and are consistently worn out.
• Kory advocates for establishing the use of a Time Matrix to turn planning
and technology into a productivity engine. Organizations should divide tasks into four primary quadrants, create a culture of trust around discussing what is important, and promote Q2 activities:

KEY TAKEAWAYS/QUOTES
• Act on the important, don’t react to the urgent.
• Identify the one thing you should stop doing so that you can devote your
best time, attention and energy to what is important.
• Leaders define what is important and not important constantly.

As the Global Practice Leader for Organisational Development at Franklin Covey, Kory focuses on creating cultures of great confidence, developing great leaders and extraordinary productivity in people, teams and organisations. Kory has more than 25 years of experience in business, during which she has incorporated a unique perspective with a holistic view of organisational development.

Combining her experience as an executive with her roles as a senior consultant in Leadership and the Global Practice Leader for Organisational Development at FranklinCovey, Kory doesn’t only understand strategy and the key principles to building great systems, leaders, and cultures of success, but can also offer practical solutions that facilitate the behavioural changes necessary for the desired results.

Here Scott Miller sits down with bestselling author and productivity expert Kory Kogon to talk the future of productivity and practical advice for getting things done.

Kory is the coauthor of the Wall Street Journal bestseller The 5 Choices: The Path to Extraordinary Productivity, and before taking on her role at FranklinCovey, Kory was the executive vice president for global operations at AlphaGraphics, Inc. for six years.

Building a Culture of Extraordinary Productivity

Buried Alive: The State of 21st Century Productivity
Learning the organisational processes that provide consistency in filtering the important from the less or not important and create a culture of productivity Turning planning and technology into a productivity engine
The “brains” and “body” to get the right things done: The “5 energy drivers” that ensure sustainable mental and physical energy.

This email may help someone in the Digital Women’s Network for their sales team. The content is resonating and practical for the girls and guys who have to sell and don’t want to appear like ambulance chasers considering the environment.

During this time I’ve been running a 45 -60 minute group coaching on ‘How To Sell Remotely When Nobody Wants To See You’

– No PPTs, No Breakout Rooms, No Big Sales Pitches – just me and whoever is on the call and the feedback has been great. It was picked up by The CEO Institute and now being shared only with my clients, prospects, database and people I know – you are one of them.

The request for me to run a couple more means I will be repeating it next week on Wednesday May 6th at 10am…and I have included the Zoom Link below to click on and register if it was something that resonated.

If you have sales team members or colleagues you would like to be on the call, please forward them this email.

The 3 main distinctions people received were around:

The ‘framing’ of the call to remove the awkwardness

The necessity and how to transition your new positioning statements and

The need to language your value to set yourself up for Q3/4

And more…

Because of security issues, I’m asking everyone to register in advance for the session and here’s the link –

https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJArdu2vqTkqGNAFBcVLncfaeTd06wICwOI4

Hope you/they can make it. In the meantime, take care and speak soon.

Btw – this one is complementary

A sad truth is, the world is at a standstill right now thanks to Covid-19. People all around the world are being told to “stay home, stay safe.” It is wonderful for health and safety to keep this virus from spreading worse than it already has. However, there is a downside for businesses or companies if they have not yet embraced the digital world, but rely on clients and customers.

As of April 7, 2020, approximately 66% of businesses in Australia have reported a decrease in cash flow in the short time since the pandemic began.

The big question is, how are businesses going to get back on top post-Covid-19?

They will need to focus on their digital approach and most importantly, their website and digital marketing to transform their brick and mortar business to online e-commerce store.

Websites: Why Do You Need a Good One?

Since the onset of Covid-19, businesses in Australia have had an uphill climb. Nearly 40% of businesses now rely on the internet to satisfy their customer’s needs. More than ever before, they deliver products and focus attention on online services.

If you had to close your doors, you can still adapt your business, transforming the way you deliver services and create new opportunities. Starting with a clear digital marketing strategy. There are many simple strategies with the most simplest way you can focus on initially right now. This includes setting up your company information on Google My Business and Yelp. This is the most common and free tool to set up your business online. The goal is to guide people to your website rather than your brick and mortar storefront. It will demonstrate that you are doing your part to keep customers and yourself safe from COVID-19.

The trick is, you must have a website that is user-friendly enough for people to navigate. They have to be able to find the information that they would seek in your business setting, whether it is the products they need or the services they depend on. So what is the best practices for a good website development?

The Value of Good Web Development

When a customer visits your website, they are not there to waste the day. They are there with the hope that you can provide for their needs during this time when they are physically distancing. Your website has mere seconds to convince them that you are there for them. As a business, you have to understand that online, they are not restricted to your products or services. They have thousands of options. You have to focus on what will make your website best for them and best for their journey while there.

There are several factors to consider when building a user friendly and search engine optimisation website. They include:

The Speed of Your Website. Does it load quickly enough? Or will the user have to deal with unresponsive web pages?

The Usability of the Website. Do you have all the information they seek labelled clearly? Can they search for the information quickly?

The Aesthetics of Your Site. Branding is key.

The digital face of your business is so important to keep continuity. Bright flashing advertisements or wrong colour choices can make a potential customer click the other way. The website needs to be nice to look at if you want to keep clients happy.

Small Business Trends, reported that 93% of buyers say they focus on visual appearances of a website and 85% claim that the colour often influences their purchasing decisions.

Content Matters.

A content strategy is key to the success of a business online future. It flows from your customer’s journey- providing key information for people before and when they visit your website.
Your Contact Information. In a “brick and mortar” setting, people can get a sense of who they are dealing with through physical, face to face contact. They can ask for recommendations or advice from your employees or you. Today, that is not an option. To keep the experience personalised for customers needs, you can still invite them to contact you with questions or concerns. Covid-19 has not slowed phone calls, emails, and other contact options such as chatbot or message window.

Mobile Friendliness.

Even though people are at home, they still rely on their mobile devices. Can they view your site’s content easily with a mobile device? You can also test how friendly your website for free

If you are unsure of how to build a functional website that is A. aesthetically pleasing and B. provides an enjoyable user experience, whilst C. driving consumer sales, you can ask experts for help. It may be the key to staying ahead during and post this pandemic.

How Much Do Websites Normally Cost?

A solid website that offers a good user experience is not usually cheap. Packages from many digital marketing companies and/or website agencies can range from $15k up to $100K. If you find someone or a company offering to build you a cheap website, you should know that they are likely inexperienced. This is not good when you depend on it to keep your head above water during these troubled times. In Melbourne, a good average cost for a high-quality website build ranges from $15-$30K. This is a fair price, but it is important to understand that the cost could go up depending on the complexity of the website you need.

The Best Practice for Website Development

When your business website matters most, you should choose a premium website approach and consider consulting with an experienced and proven Digital Marketing company with a key strength in web design. The company will know what it may take for you to get ahead and become relevant. The team should have a methodical process of creating an online experience for your customers and clients. A good website agency can help you with things like:
Accessing the Digital Opportunity for Your Business -Aka Customer Analytics
Website Design
Customer Journey Mapping
Digital Marketing Strategies
SEO and Google Analytics
Website Traffic
Conversion and Marketing Automation
Content Strategy and Creation
Photography and Video
Social Media Strategy
and More
With web design companies like Digital White Space, you will get everything you need to get on the path to digital success, even if you are on a limited budget. Simply contact us to learn more.

BESTSELLING AUTHOR AND TEACHER OF LEADERSHIP, JIM COLLINS.

Last year whilst at the New York Study Tour we attended The World Business Forum, I had the pleasure of hearing from and meeting Jim Collins. I think its a perfect time to share Jim’s perspectives on “How to Lead in a Disruptive World” and here are my notes from his session on Leadership.

The behaviours and characteristics necessary to lead effectively in a fast changing world.

What it takes to build long-term sustained performance into the DNA of an organisation.

The keys to achieving a culture of discipline with an ethic of entrepreneurship.

How we can increase our Return on Luck, making the most of our good luck and bad.

Recognising and stopping the five stages of corporate decline.

Greatness is not a function of circumstance or luck, but a matter of conscious choice coupled with incredible discipline.

Jim Collins

This is according to Jim Collins, who has been researching what makes great companies tick for more than a quarter of a century. In his presentation delivered at the World Business Forum’s 2019 New York City event, ‘Super Minds,’ Jim laid out the leadership traits required for companies make the leap from good to great.

Disciplined leadership: Great leaders come in a range of personality
types but always share the paradoxical traits of personal humility combined with an indomitable will. These leaders display a willingness to put them- selves in service of the greater cause they are serving – they never make it about themselves.

Disciplined thought: Change can only come when leaders confront the
“brutal facts,” because they will inevitably confront you. Only when you do this, in conjunction with embracing “The Stockade Paradox” (unwavering faith that you can and will prevail in the end), can organizations navigate times of peril successfully.

Turn the flywheel: Nothing great happens overnight or can be achieved in one fell swoop. Instead, develop a process of turning a heavy flywheel to build momentum until a point of breakthrough. What is your organization’s flywheel?

Build greatness to last: Of all companies on the 1955 Fortune 500 list,
less than 15 percent are here today. To survive, companies require a productive paranoia built into their culture. Build a company that can survive without the CEO by creating a set of timeless core values, purpose and having a relentless drive for progress.

KEY TAKEAWAYS/QUOTES

• Level 5 leaders understand that you cannot motivate the wrong people into the right people. Get the right people and don’t demotivate them.
• Stop putting your best people on your biggest problems, instead put them on your biggest opportunities.
• Discipline is consistency of action. The signature of mediocrity is not
unwillingness to change, but chronic inconsistency.

In a time of a changing buyer landscaper, pre-sale engagement has changed dramatically. Buyers used to have very limited information, now they have more than they can even use. If you don’t want your marketing message to get ignored, it needs to be more targeted and personal than ever before. Nurturing leads with relevant content is now a requirement.

THE DIGITAL MARKETING PROBLEM

“The average sales cycle has increased 22% over the past 5 years due to more decision makers being involved in the buying process”

MARKETING SHERPA 2018

From the start of the buying sales cycle to closing the sale, there are several roadblocks businesses need to overcome :
Not enough leads to feed the sales funnel
No easy way to qualify leads.
No way to effectively nurture leads
Big gaps in follow-up from the sales team.
Can’t see where the leaks in the pipeline are
Don’t know which tactics are driving revenue

Only 27% of leads sent directly to sales are qualified.” – MARKETING SHERPA 2018

A PREVIEW OF MARKETING AUTOMATION

Marketing Automation is a set of tools that let companies:

Generate more leads by identifying anonymous web visitors and capturing them with forms, so your sales funnel stays full

Increase number of qualified leads by nurturing all leads with personalised content

Drive more sales by identifying sales-ready leads for the sales team, and helping them follow up as fast as possible

Improves up-selling and cross-selling by developing and retaining existing customers

Enables marketing teams to see comprehensive ROI for every marketing tactic by tracking the entire sales process from end-to-end

THE DIGITAL MARKETING SOLUTION

With automation, it is easier to sail through the roadblocks as it gives you several tools to enhance your sales funnel at each stage :

Fill your sales funnel by capturing leads with great content gated by dynamic forms.

Identify highly interested and sales -ready leads with lead scoring.

Develop leads that aren’t sales-ready by automatically putting them on nurturing campaigns. Instantly notify salespeople about leads that are ready to buy.

See exactly when leads fall out of your pipeline and take action.

Know which tactics are driving revenue with end-to-end ROI (RETURN ON INVESTMENT)

SO WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CRM YOU ARE CURRENTLY USING AND MARKETING AUTOMATION TOOLS?

APPLICATION OF MARKETING AUTOMATION TO B2B COMPANIES

In nearly all cases, the high revenue per sales transaction (RPU) of the typical B2B company justifies the relatively small spend on marketing automation. Every sale is worth thousands and every lead is worth hundreds of dollars. Typical B2B companies spend hundreds of thousands, or millions, of dollars on sales salaries and lead generation activities. Therefore, it is extremely important to identify every lead and convert each of these leads into sales at the highest rate possible.

Marketing automation drives more qualified leads and collects valuable sales intelligence to improve closing rates. These efficiencies are incredibly valuable to your B2B clients

APPLICATION OF MARKETING AUTOMATION TO B2C COMPANIES

Marketing automation present B2C companies with a different set of value propositions, but without a doubt, the benefits of marketing automation for B2C companies can be equally impressive.

The ability to segment customers and automate near one-on-one communication will drive more sales. While all the analytics a marketing automation tool captures will help eliminate waste, refine messaging and prove ROI.

In summary, marketing automation is a must have for today’s business to generate more revenue by increasing qualified leads and getting ahead of the competition.

Back in the early days of digital marketing, marketers performed the ritual of pulling down raw log files from servers to learn insights about where people came from, what pages they visited, what actions they performed and so on. While the rise of Google and various digital tools have helped us overcome such primitive problems, the challenges faced by marketers in today’s buyers landscape have changed a great deal.

Buyers today have more information than they can even use. They are followed by ads everywhere they go on the web. It is not enough for a business to have an online presence. To get enough leads to feed their sales funnel, they need to deliver relevant content to their target audience. moreover they need to build a relationship that the customer buys into. If businesses don’t want their marketing message to get lost or ignored in a sea of competitors, it needs to be authentic and more tailored and personal than ever before. Customers are seeing through the Blogger networks who post for $$.

To achieve this we need to begin with the customer Journey, understanding what is the process of engagement for our customers, across all off and online channels. Then we can understand the opportunities available to engage. While personalisation is becoming essential to drive more sales, it is impossible to manually track down each visitor to a website, identifying them and then sending out relevant messages at a relevant time.

This is where marketing automation comes into picture. Marketing automation platforms, when fed with the right tasks and actions can increase lead generation by up to 5 times while decreasing the manual effort. Marketing automation lets companies achieve a host of different objectives ranging from generating more leads by identifying anonymous web visitors and capturing them with forms, to increasing number of qualified leads by nurturing all leads with personalized content, driving more sales by identifying sales-ready leads for the sales team, and helping them follow up as fast as possible, to improving up-selling and cross-selling by developing and retaining existing customers, and finally seeing a comprehensive ROI for every marketing tactic by tracking the entire sales process from end-to-end.

Proving ROI is an ongoing pain point for marketers, so it’s no surprise that 45% of agencies rely on marketing automation platforms to show ROI and 42% use marketing automation to measure performance for both their own marketing efforts and those of their clients. Nearly 90% of agencies say their marketing automation strategy is successful. *source sharpspring

Then again, there is the mammoth task facing agencies and companies while making the leap to marketing automation : implementation and ease of use.

While there is less manual effort required once the platform is well set up, it does take some expertise and resource to implement and integrate a company’s current processes into a new platform. Dedicated staff time is also required to monitor the results on an on-going basis and aligning objectives accordingly. It is not enough to purchase and install an automation software without feeding it with the right instructions from time to time. E.g. in regards to email marketing, while the software can personalise the content of an email and automatically trigger sending based on certain actions performed by a user, a marketer would still have to construct the email and set new triggers from time to time to prevent periods of no contact.

Marketing is notorious for being difficult to report on, from what’s working and what isn’t, to the ROI of a particular campaign. By capturing every lead that comes in, whether by phone or by form, you’ll have 100% attribution across the board. Among some of the most valuable features of marketing automation are analytics and reporting. Analytics is also the number one need that drives companies’ search for marketing automation. With all your digital assets under one hood, report generation becomes easier and consistent.

In summary, companies that invest initially in understanding their customer engagement opportunities through mapping out the journey, and allocate a part of their marketing budget to automation, can increase their ROI manifold.

Google Adwords is all About Great Copywriting to Increase Conversions

We’ve all been there before. Whether setting up a new account or fine-tuning an existing one, analysing the performance of your client’s Adwords involves a lot of measurements. In an ideal world, you want your campaigns to hum along without too much of your own time spent tweaking and testing.

Anyone who manages successful SEM campaigns will have a great system in place that spends on the right keywords, doesn’t overspend too early in the month, and shows ongoing improvements in conversions, including timely advice on what competitors and Google are doing.

However, although the tools are there for PPC guns to maintain incredible quality control on their client’s campaigns, there is also a fundamental aspect of any ad that will triumph over anything you do once the ads are running: compelling copy.

Opportunity in a Time of Intense Competition

In a world where every brand is trying to grab our attention and be memorable, the need for great Adwords copy has never been higher. But the challenge has also never been harder to cut through the noise and grab that piece of the market which will make your client’s over the moon.

Google says that “To effectively reach potential customers, your text ads should be specific, relevant, attractive and empowering.”

With recent changes to Google’s expanded ads structure in late 2016, there’s never been a better time to get creative, think big and cut loose with your ads.

Put Your Thinking Cap On

The two 30 character headline format presents a perfect opportunity to supplement or enhance your initial offering. Here are four tips to get you started:

Highlight the value, distinctiveness and basic awesomeness of the product or service you’re writing for. If you don’t know this, you probably shouldn’t be managing the client’s Adwords!

Get personal as well with “you”, “your”, “yourself” in the headlines and appeal to user emotions. People love feeling special.

What are they truly looking for and how are you answering their specific needs with your two headlines?

Don’t just sound like a carbon copy of your nearest competitor, so check what they’re saying too and look for semantic variations which draw people’s attention.

The 80 character (up from 30) description texts are where advertisers can inject personality to their ads. We’ve found this space is enough to create a unique tone-of-voice and engage with users on a more human level. Don’t underestimate the power of being clever, a little provocative or using a pop-culture reference. Entertain people and they’ll warm to your client’s brand immediately.

Now Put it to the Test!

Of course, there’s no point in learning about how to write great copy for ads without testing them to find out which one works best. You may be the copywriter and you get to speak to the audience in the way you think will best reach them, but the audience will decide on which ad does that best, every single time.

And if your ad happens to increase clicks but not conversions, you may have a problem with the content or UX on the landing page URL. There is such a thing as an ad that is too well written.

Put in the Time and Expertise

We make sure to invest a suitable number of hours every month to the copy we create for our client’s, as we’ve seen firsthand how well written, engaging, entertaining, and inspiring ads can lead to more clicks and higher conversions from the right people who are ready to make purchasing decisions.

Find out how this traditional approach of brand endorsement has transformed into today's digital space.

Introduction

According to Wikipedia, Influencer marketing is a form of marketing in which focus is placed on specific key individuals (or types of individual) rather than the target market as a whole. It identifies the individuals that have influence over potential buyers, and orients marketing activities around these influencers.

In simpler and modern words, influencer marketing is a form of testimonial advertising where the influencers rather than the brand recommends a product/service and hence is more believable to the audience.

Who is an influencer?

In today’s digital world, an influencer is an online persona with a huge following, mostly on social media and who has the power to “influence” his followers’ purchase decision.

Influencers have been around for centuries, even before the internet existed and largely as popular celebrities endorsing a brand. The scenario today, however, is completely different. An influencer has become more realistic and approachable than ever before.

Where do you find them?

On social media of course! Some of the bloggers and vloggers with millions of followers today have risen from being just ordinary internet users but with focus, determination and discipline. Thanks to the growing popularity and power of social media and blogging. Instagram, for example, is the goto for fashion lovers and thus poses a large opportunity for fashion brands to create an influencer market by hiring top style instagrammers who already have a vast network of admirers.

Why is it beneficial?

Influencer marketing is beneficial merely because of our human instinct which makes it easier for consumers to be convinced about a product from a person they admire, rather than by a brand they have never heard of. When you advertise through an influencer, you already have a warm audience. Moreover, every other brand is turning to online influencer marketing. So while a startup who has a running campaign of influencer marketing has the attention of a million prospective buyers, another startup with no campaign would still be struggling to build their online presence.

How to start your own influencer marketing campaign

Identify the influencer most relevant to you – If you are a new business and bucks are dear to you, you may want to start with identifying bloggers who will settle for free products rather than monetary rewards. The hunt usually begins with the business themselves having a social profile and actively engaging with influencers. This may include familiarising yourself with their offering, commenting on their posts etc. Once you’ve listened to what they have to say, it’s time for you to start a conversation

Start a conversation with your influencer – This is where you need to convince your influencers that your product is really worth their time. When you write that first pitch email/message, make sure to sound human, and not automaton.

Start campaigning – Boom! Work out a solution best suited for your business as well as the influencer and you are ready to go.

How to track a campaign

Once you’ve finally landed an influencer and started campaigning, it is necessary to track results in order to measure ROI. While conversion tracking can be a combination of several tools and methods, here are a few that anyone can implement

Post impressions and engagement – Impressions are the very first indication of how successful your campaign is going to be. And social influencers are a sure shot way to gather maximum impressions and engagements to your post. Higher the number of comments and shares you get, higher the chances of your post going viral.

Using Google Analytics URL builder to tag campaigns – Google Analytics allows to build custom URLs with parameters like campaign name etc that you can add to your social posts. It is then easy to track conversions from these URLs via GA reports

Specific campaign promo codes – Giving out campaign specific promo codes is another great way to create a sense of urgency and hence gain increased engagement.
